Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Heather Christensen
Taking a cue from the nostalgia of books like The Dangerous Book for Boys, this book is an odd assortment of puzzles, practical jokes and activities. Some of the activities described in the book are standard games like charades or projects such as making a birdhouse. Children will enjoy baffling their parents with any of the many number tricks and puzzles, and the whole family will benefit from projects like learning how to find the North Star or getting tips about recycling. Alongside these practical activities are some more unusual ones—"How to Tell if Dad Has Been Replaced by an Alien" and how to "Escape a Charging Elephant" for example. The black and white line drawings look as if they have been lifted from the Dick and Jane books of the 1950s—the all-white family consists of a brother in slacks and T-shirt, a sister in a dress and pigtails, a father in a collared shirt and slacks, and a mother in dress and pumps (except when shown with curlers in her hair getting into bed). The activities are not grouped by type or subject, but appear to be designed for random browsing. Fortunately, a detailed table of contents will help readers find specific projects. While not for everyone, this book offers fun alternatives for families wanting a break from the electronic age. Reviewer: Heather Christensen

Gr 4-7

Think of this as a one-stop guide for all types of activities, from practical jokes to magic, and what to do in an emergency. This broad compilation includes enough ideas and directions to keep kids and families occupied and interacting. Pranks like how to short sheet a bed, games, puzzles, advice, and mathematical wonders are all included. Unlikely ideas like how to convince your neighbors that you are royalty or perhaps vampires may not be advisable or even successful, but the idea of play-acting comes across. Green ideas like making toys from junk or creating compost are worthwhile, and safety tips such as how to build a shelter in the forest are more practical than others, such as how to wash a dog in space. Despite the juxtaposition of likely and unlikely activities, there is enough here to keep readers interested. Simple black line drawings clarify the directions and suggest possible reactions. The characterizations result in a 1950s look and feel. Whether this is for kids or adults or both begs the question. There is something for everyone easily discovered via the zippy titles or humorous images that accompany the one- to three-page explanations. Text is simple and descriptive although the arithmetic might take a bit of effort.-Janet S. Thompson, Chicago Public Library

With THE FAMILY BOOK, Scholastic waxes nostalgic about the time before television, video games, iPods, and cell phones. Believe it or not, families actually used to gather around, playing games that involved nothing more than pen and paper or their imaginations! Seriously - it's all true!

In what can sometimes be called a satirical manner, THE FAMILY BOOK brings out all the games, activities, and family-bonding rituals of yore: charades, "mind reading" tricks, puzzles, and ways to amuse and amaze your family and friends.

The hilarity ensues with tips on how to wash your dog in space, how to make toys out of junk, and such favorites as short-sheeting a bed and how to vanquish (and even slay!) vampires.

Yes, it's quirky, and yes, it may take a miracle for your family to actually sit down together and try out some of the activities. In the long run, though, it will be worth it, especially to see your mom actually begin to think she's invisible or your dad trying to escape a car that's perched on the edge of a cliff.
