Overview

Jesse Calhoun met Devin Palmer five years ago, in front of a Christmas tree at a friend's party. It was Jesse's first holiday alone, away from home. Devin didn't have much of a home to go back to. They found a way to make the season brighter, together.

Four years ago, Jesse brought Devin to his parents' house and came out to them. It wasn't all roses, but his family came around, and Devin has spent each holiday with the Calhouns since then. Jesse really loves sharing Christmas with his family, and sharing his family with Devin.

So he isn't prepared to hear his mom say, “I don't want Devin to come to the house for Christmas Eve this year.” Suddenly it's not smooth sailing, keeping peace with the family he was born with.

Meet the Author

I've been writing as long as I can remember (which is longer than I like to admit). I started creating M/M romances in high-school, filling binders with stories about what Starsky and Hutch really did on their days off. (Pretty PG-rated stuff - we're talking sheltered fourteen-year-old here. I was into the romantic possibilities.) Any potential writing career got side-tracked by forays into art, psychology, teaching, and a biomedical profession. And the challenges of raising children. When I took up the keyboard again it was just for fun, writing books for my own entertainment. At about manuscript seven, my epically patient spouse told me that if I was going to spend that much time at it, I should try to get published. And he kept saying it, loudly, until I submitted one. And it was accepted! Life Lessons was published May 2011 by MLR Press. A first short story, And to All a Good Night - Life Lessons 1.5, that follows it was soon made available here, and the Life Lessons series is now complete at four MLR Press novels and three free short stories. I've been delighted by the reception my work has received, and I have other books and short stories in print. If you want a short, free taste of my work that stands alone, consider "Like the Taste of Summer", also available here.My very first Smashwords book, Lies and Consequences, started as a kind of reaction after the November 2010 elections when the DADT repeal looked like it might be derailed. Then I was caught by surprise as I finished the book in December and the repeal passed. I tweaked it by upping the action, and deemphasizing the DADT subplot. The result was something lightweight, but hopefully fun. So I put it out as a free read. I hope you enjoy it. I really appreciate reviews - what you liked and what you didn't. Maybe your comments will help turn the next good book into a better book. KH

A great series. Start with this book and pick it up with The Family You Make. Kaje Harper is a very skilled writer who pulls her audience in with great characters, great plot lines and a fleshed out story. I love that between the two books, she takes her time and you feel like you know all of these characters very well by the time the book has ended. Of course, the books end much too quickly for me, I want them to continue on and on and on. I loved the characters that much. Well written and a very involved read. My very favorite kind of book. I've loved everything I've read by this author, you will too.

his one left me thinking for days. The concepts of family and acceptance are played out really well here. I loved Jesse's fire about Devin being part of the family. Devin is so sweet and giving; quickly giving forgiveness when needed. He sees the needs of others and willingly adjusts regardless of his own feelings. You can feel Sam's awkwardness in meeting his birth family. His response to his birth mom asking if his brother would "out grow" being gay was superb. Sam is unconditionally devotion to his little brother and when he gets a call for help Sam doesn't disappoint.  I'm so glad that the second book is finally here. I'm looking forward to reading it next. Adult read

A story about people who seem very real, who aren't perfectly accepting of the son's boyfriend. There are hurt feelings, but understanding and memories. The author recently wrote a great sequel about Chris's brother, and we see Jesse and Devin quite a bit as well.

The name first caught my eye and then story did the rest. I enjoyed the book very much and could relate to some parts and would recommend this to all my friends! "It will get better!"

A sweet, lovely short story. The mother and son are both in difficult situations and the author turns the angst into an intriguing story. There is a sequel out now that is novel length and I highly recommend reading it as well.
