Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Bailey’s story reads aloud well, while Slavin’s artwork captures its drama and humor in a series of action-filled acrylic paintings? Every child who has watched a bigger, brawnier opposing team take the field will feel for the plucky Farm Team.

A sassy, well-crafted story? the mostly full-page illustrations are packed with little details that will amuse children and adults alike, ? Bailey and Slavin have produced a gem of a picture book that will remain popular for as long as hockey underdogs continue to compete for Lord Stanley’s famed cup.

Slavin’s goofy acrylics playfully realize the joyful mayhem of shinny, and Bailey’s story gets the competitive burn just right, even if for a bunch of chickens, sheep and piglets.

Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
At Farmer Stolski's farm, winter seems to last forever and there is only one good thing about it: hockey. The animals love hockey and all share the same dream—winning the Stolski Cup. For fifty years the Farm Team has tried and failed to win the big game against the Bush League Bandits. This year the Farm Team has practiced harder than ever, but the cows are too big, the piglets are too small, and the chickens are hopeless. Still, the team has heart and hope as the big game begins. The Bandits are a bunch of big, smelly, mangy varmints who turn out to play as dirty as they look. But a bunch of unlikely Farm Team players end up in the game, including Betty the cow, Mariette the chicken, and Little Pete the piglet. Can they compete when the Bandits put in a grizzly bear as goalie? Slavin's lively, colorful illustrations take readers along as the characters learn the importance of belief and teamwork.

PreS-Gr 1-In this rollicking tale, a hockey team made up of pigs, ducks, and cows takes on the Bush League Bandits, creatures from the wild who have "claws on their fangs and fangs on their claws." Slavin's cartoon illustrations, rendered in acrylics, move the story rapidly along. The game gets downright nasty as Needles the porcupine purposely crashes into the goalie, played by Big George the pig wrapped up in bundles of hay for protection, and knocks him out of the game. Not to be discouraged, the Farm Team replaces its goalie with Betty, a cow who is young and solid and fills most of the net standing sideways, only to be outshone by the Bush League placing a grizzly bear in their goal with his hindquarters nearly filling an expansive spread. The surprise ending will bring cheers from the crowd as they ask for repeated readings.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Public Library System, Manassas, VA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
