The Father of Baseball is first rate.

A bio of Henry Chadwick was long overdue and Schiff's effort is first rate. Baseball as we know today can be traced back to Chadwick¿s efforts to make baseball America's National Pastime. The bio covers Chadwick's family history and how it shaped him until the day he died. Schiff does a great job covering the major events of Chadwick¿s life and the events that shaped baseball in the 19th Century and beyond. The book is a great read for the baseball history novice who wants to learn about the true Father of Baseball.

    Fathering and Furthering Baseball.

A lot of people who are interested in baseball or history or both know a little abouth Henry Chadwick. They know that he was an early sports writer or devised a box score for baseball. Umtill now few knew any more than that. Andrew Schiff changes all that. He takes what is knowen about Mr. Chadwick, the context of the times he lived in and the values he held and weavs them into an interesting story. If you want to get beyond that box score read the book and find out.

I heard Schiff speak on 8-27-08 at NYPL.

Schiff is a terrific speaker -- knowledgeable without being stuffy, informative and still down to earth. He's a sports historian with a breadth of baseball knowledge, especially on the 19th century development of the game. Anyone who enjoys history would enjoy him, but especially anyone who is a baseball buff. I hope his book gets wide exposure.
