Overview

The Feelings Book is the emotional counterpart to the best-selling The Care & Keeping of You. It takes pretty scary questions-"Is it okay to feel this way? Am I normal?" and answers them in a friendly and understandable way. When girls are younger, their feelings seem simple--happy, sad, angry, mad--there isn't much to it. But as they get older, they may feel as if they're on emotional rollercoasters. Feelings get more complex and moods start swinging. This title helps girls learn to deal with their ...

This title helps girls learn to deal with their feelings. They'll get tips, how-to's, and straightforward advice on expressing feelings, understanding them, and handling them. Topics covered include: Sweaty Palms and Knocking Knees, Why Do You Cry?, Feeling Out of Control, Sorting it Out, Feeling Positive, Reaching Out to Others, Includes a section with strategies for coping with specific emotions (fear, anxiety, jealousy, anger, loneliness, sadness, grief, feeling safe). The overriding message is that if you learn about your feelings you can keep them from spinning out of control. You can be in the driver's seat--and that makes the ride on the rollercoaster a whole lot easier.

Discusses a variety of emotions girls might experience and suggests ways of dealing with them.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Girls' mental health is the focus of The Feelings Book: The Care & Keeping of Your Emotions by Lynda Madison, illus. by Norm Bendell, a companion volume to The Care & Keeping of You. Opening sections explain emotions, others suggest how to handle powerful feelings and focus on developing positive self-esteem. Girls' comments and questions appear throughout.
Children's Literature
This clever little book, written especially for girls, is a straightforward, yet lighthearted approach to demystifying the up and down emotions of the preteen years. Using amusing cartoon-like illustrations, the book begins by talking directly to the reader, encouraging her participation throughout. Well researched and written, the book explains the physiological reasons for our emotions and goes on to suggest strategies one might use to keep emotions in a manageable range. The psychology of emotions is explained and encourages the reader to listen to the voice within, suggesting ways to distinguish negative and positive thinking and how to act on both. There are a few self-quizzes included that help the reader to identify her contrary views. It's a great little handbook for preteens with a light approach to a heavy subject. Hopefully, they will write one for boys. 2002, Pleasant Company,
— Meredith Kiger
School Library Journal
Gr 3-8-A well-done text on a topic that bears repeating. Madison explains that it's OK and perfectly normal to have feelings that are up one moment and crashing down the next. The easy-to-understand text guides readers through the physiology of dramatic, perhaps negative feelings to the final chapter of feeling positive. In between, readers are given an overview of how to identify particular emotions and what to do with them. Madison also devotes a chapter to "Help!" which has lots of practical tips for dealing with fear, anger, jealousy, etc. Particularly good is the message that readers are in charge of what they do about their emotions. Quotes in colorful boxes, a few multiple-choice questions, and cartoon illustrations on most pages make this title an appealing choice. Filled with good, reliable advice for readers dealing with the new surge of emotions, it will be a positive addition to adolescent-psychology shelves.-Elaine Baran Black, Gwinnett County Public Library, Lawrenceville, GA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

    Buy this book!

This changed my daughter....literally overnight. I would recommend this to all parents that have girls. My daughter isn't even An American Girl fan, but LOVED this book and the Journal...and all it had to offer...Once I gave her teh book she didnt' stop until she read it all and filled out the journal. Our relationship is completley different now and we communicate so much better. I am THRILLED!

You won't regret purchasing this book. Give one to every young girl you know!

I have two daughters (8, 10) who received this book and several others from American Girls as gifts from me. I was nervous that they wouldn't like them, or look at me like I am completely crazy. Surprisingly, both girls absolutely love the books. My 10 yr old has been dealing with what I consider to be ridiculous drama at school with her group of friends. I did not have the same experience when I was in elementary school, so it has been difficult for me to relate to this issue. American Girls to the rescue!

The advice given in these books are appropriate for their age range - presented in a way that doesn't seem like a lecture. Several times recently my daughter has had a question about how to handle a situation, and before I can make a suggestion, she's looking it up in her American Girls library. My 10 yr old daughter has started experiencing cycles of emotion that she doesn't understand. Knowing that she's not alone, that it's ok to be angry or sad, and how to express it in a healthy way - these are all concepts she's learned from this book.

I am grateful for the entire series! I recommend these books as gifts, starting with girls as young as 8 so there is time to learn about how to handle situations before getting in to them. The books make great gifts, and are wonderful to use as conversation starters with your child.

    Great for Moody Girls

My 8 yo really struggles sometimes with expressing herself. I found this was helpful to distract from full on tantrums. She also has the journal so she can write down her thoughts and feelings as well.

helps tremendously with the girly grumpies!

We bought this book for our 7 year old little girl. She was at that grumpy after school phase in addition to the could be grumpy at any moment phase. She read the book first and then we would let her read it to us. She loved it and now goes and reads it when she needs to settle down. I think it helped her to relate to normal girl feelings that her 2 brothers can't relate too.

Another great book which helps girls untangle the maze of emotions they experience as part of the growing up process. It is a great resource for parents and educators.

    growing up a girl

the american girl machine is very large and ever growing.dolls,books,logs(diarys)etc...most of the products were created for one thing,to get our hard earned money.some though really serve an greater purpose, the purpose for which they were created is to help young girls understand what it is to be a girl.this book deals with the complex emotions that take place as a young girl grows up.the book also deals with the feelings that occure when girls interact with other girls and with everybody else on the planit.this is a great educational tool but i find that my girls(both nine) find this book short on fun and long on education.they do learn quite a bit that they did not know and this book does let them know that what they are feeling is normal and that other girls are going through the same things.because the book is not as "fun"as it could be a lot of good stuff in this book was missed by my girls.i had to have my girls keep this book at bedside with hopes that they will read it over and over like an reference book.this is a great tool for a mother and even more-so a father.
