Reviewer: Marcella D Ridgway, VMD, MS, DACVIM (University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine)
Description: This is a quick reference covering disease conditions and clinical procedures in the domestic cat. It provides concise and easily-accessed information to aid the veterinarian in clinical management of the feline patient.
Purpose: This book is designed as a clinical guide and quick reference to feline medical and surgical problems, applications of diagnostic procedures and appropriate therapeutics. Concise and cross-indexed, the book is a practical resource in day-to-day clinical practice.
Audience: The book is directed to veterinarians in clinical practice or otherwise involved with providing medical care to domestic cats. The book is also well-suited to advanced veterinary students undertaking clinical training in feline medicine and surgery and to those preparing for veterinary licensing examination. The book presumes prior training in basic veterinary anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and clinical medicine.
Features: The book is organized into five parts; in part one, feline medical problems are addressed from a problem-oriented or clinical presentation perspective. Part two presents chapters on specific feline diseases, with part three addressing clinical procedures and part four detailing surgical procedures specific to the feline patient. Appendices are presented in part five. Within each part, specific topics are covered in individual chapters, providing focused and easily-accessed information. Chapters are concise, beginning with a brief overview and proceeding through diagnosis, treatment and prognosis sections followed by a list of suggested readings pertaining to the chapter topic. Diagnosis and treatment sections are presented in an outline format to facilitate quick access and readability. The book is illustrated with black-and-white plates which are limited in number but provided where most pertinent and useful. A feline drug formulary is included among the appendices.
Assessment: This book is unique in providing a compilation of medical and surgical information pertinent to the feline patient in a quick-reference form; as such, it offers considerable advantage over the general small animal quick references, which offer little or no detail regarding species-specific problems or procedures. Characterized by brevity and breadth of coverage, this book is a valuable resource for veterinarians in small animal practice.
