The Felix Activity Book, inspired by the best-selling books letters from felix and felix travels back in time, is both a learning tool and a personalized album for children to explore time and again.

Starring Felix the rabbit and his friend Sophie, this departure from conventional activity books features 83 illustrated puzzles, games, and other creative endeavors. The activities focus on geography and history, but they also touch upon many other themes, including language, mathematics, and visual perception. In order to address the diverse capabilities of children of various ages, each exercise is marked with a star scale to evaluate its difficulty level as uncomplicated (H), challenging (HH), or very challenging (HHH).

Pack your bag--Felix and Sophie are inviting you on a wonderful journey!

"Before the Common Era." The Common Era (c.e.) begins with the year 0, so any year that is b.c.e. happened before the year 0. Before the year 0, years counted down. For example, 10 b.c.e. was one year before 9 b.c.e. After the year 0, years count up. For example, 1999 is one year before 2000. Sometimes you will also see the word circa. This means "about" or "around." If someone was born circa 1900, this means we don't know exactly what year he or she was born, but we do know it was sometime around the year 1900.

Felix and Sophie are very happy that they will be seeing you throughout their journey, and they wish you good luck.

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
globe-hopping Felix, the well-traveled rabbit featured in Letters from Felix and Felix Travels Back in Time, reappears to teach geography and history in the Felix Activity Book by Marc Tyler Nobleman and Leslie Moseley, illus. by George Ulrich. Letters from Felix lead to activities-83 in all-such as drawing a cartoon strip, unscrambling words, calculating time zone changes, and coloring the continents; these reinforce the reader's grasp on history and geography, and are conveniently marked for difficulty levels. A four-sheet color section also includes a play passport, postcards, a puzzle and a Viking helmet.

Note to Parents and Teachers

For a rabbit, Felix is incredibly resourceful. He writes letters. He carries a suitcase. He has taken a whirlwind tour around the world. He's even traveled back in time, a feat which humans have yet to accomplish. Now he has inspired the activity book that you are holding, and it incorporates all of Felix's varied experiences.

In the glut of activity books available today, The Felix Activity Book is distinct. Featuring eighty-four original activities, no type of exercise is repeated. This publication captures the whimsy of Letters from Felix and Felix Travels Back in Time, the books on which it is based. Every puzzle and game is fun, but each one also has educational value. The central themes are geography and history, but we also smuggle in subjects like language, mathematics, and international cultures. Reading, writing, drawing, deductive reasoning, creative thinking, storytelling, visual perception, map reading, and time-telling skills are cultivated. Ideas that are addressed include values, self-awareness, and self-image.

Important new words are in bold and defined. Children can understand every activity even if the defined words are too difficult for a child; the definitions are given simply as a supplement. This book is not meant to be a comprehensive study tool, but all of the information in it has been carefully researched and will make learning fun for children. Population figures, statistics, and dates are current as of the first printing. Ideally, The Felix Activity Book will encourage children to refer to other sources (encyclopedias, maps, dictionaries, etc.) to learn more about the cities, countries, eras, and people that Felixvisits.

Every activity is marked by a simple star system which indicates its difficulty level. An activity is either uncomplicated (*), challenging (**), or very challenging (***). These stars are meant to be used only as a guide. This star system is used instead of assigning an age range to the book because not every four-, seven-, or ten-year-old learns at the same rate. It should not restrict; rather, it should challenge. We made a strong effort to have something for everyone.

Uniquely, this book is never "finished." Even when all the activities eventually are completed, The Felix Activity Book remains the child's personalized album to enjoy reading time and again. It may sound like a stretch for an activity book, but it's not. If a rabbit can cross the globe, enter the time stream, and be home in time for dinner, then anything is possible.

Introduction

Felix the rabbit and his friend Sophie are about to share their adventures with you! Felix has traveled to six places around the world and six time periods in history, and he is very excited about it. He is so excited that he has written you a letter from each place he has visited. At the beginning of each letter, there is no name written after the opening "Dear"-you are supposed to write your name there because Felix is writing to you. Felix has also written puzzles and games about each place so that you can learn as much about the world as Felix has. When you are finished with each activity, you can even color in the pictures.

Two things about this book are very different than other books you may have read.

First, this book is not yet completely written. Felix started it, but you will finish it! You get to do the activities-that means you will be an author and an illustrator! At your age, that is very impressive.

Second, you do not need to go through this book in order. Find what interests you. If something is hard, skip it and come back to it later. If you come across a word you do not understand, you can circle it and ask an adult what it means, or you can look it up in a dictionary. Remember, none of this is a test. It is all for fun!

Not all of the activities have a right answer. When there is an answer, the bottom of the page will tell you where to find the solution.

Sometimes in this book you will see the letters b.c.e. after a year. This means "Before the Common Era." The Common Era (c.e.) begins with the year 0, so any year that is b.c.e. happened before the year 0.
