Overview

The Childe Cycle, also known as the Dorsai series, is Gordon R. Dickson's future history of humankind and its ultimate destiny. Now one of its central novels return to print in a two-volume corrected edition.

In The Final Encyclopedia the human race is split into three Splinter cultures: the Friendlies, fanatic in their faith; the truth-seeking Exotics; and the warrior Dorsai. But now humanity is threatened by the power-hungry Others, whose triumph would end all human progress.

Raised to a destiny as humanity's champion, Hal Mayne must journey deep within his soul to gather the strength he needs to face his ultimate opponent: Bleys Ahrens, the shadowy, powerful leader of the Others. On Hal's success depends nothing less than the future of the human race...

A towering landmark of future history, The Final Encyclopedia is a novel every SF fan needs to own.

Apparently, this book was originally printed in 1984 as a behemoth 700+ pgs and was reprinted into two books Volumes 1 & 2 in the 1990s to allow people to read 'Young Bleys' and 'Other' in between. Volume 2 starts with Chapter 38. - WHAT I LOVED - Answers to the questions: What does the word Childe mean anyway? Who were Hal Mayne's parents? Are the Alternative Laws still practiced by anyone? Does the guy finally get the girl? What does Bleys want to accomplish? Will any of the Splinter Cultures survive? WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE - grammar, style, too wordy, not enough action to be called Military SciFi, too many typos, too many speeches, it's as if someone told Dickson that his previous books were too short and he had to beef things up - they lied. This book doesn't live up to the genius of Dorsai. [I hear that 'The Chantry Guild' ties up the loose ends of 'Other' and 'The Final Encyclopedia' but still does not END the series, perhaps his estate will publish posthomously like Asimov's or Herbert's, we'll see.]
