Overview

Sixteen-year-old novelist Riley Carney works magic in this high fantasy adventure story brought to life by memorable, vibrant characters. The Fire Stone, the first book in the captivating Reign of the Elements series, is rooted in genuine adolescent thought and emotion throughout a journey of danger, friendship, and courage, as a group of teenagers, led by fifteen-year-old Matt, attempt to save their world.

Matt knows how to shovel hay, dig trenches, and dodge his father’s whip, but when three terrifying creatures attack Matt, and he is rescued by a wizard, he kidnaps a baby alorath, and is befriended by elves, Matt’s life transforms overnight from dreary to astonishing. When he unwittingly joins a quest to find the Fire Stone, one of the elusive Stones of the Elements which have the power to destroy the world, Matt is thrust into a string of perilous adventures. He soon discovers that magic does exist and that he has extraordinary powers that can change his destiny and determine the fate of Mundaria.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Rachel Wadham
Matt is drawn into a world of magic and political intrigue when he is sent by his demanding father to deliver a message and he is set upon by bandits only to be saved by a wizard. With a powerful magician, Malik, who once tried to rule the world, rising to power once again, Matt joins two elves on a quest to discover the fire stone, a magical object that is the main quarry for Malick's henchman. Along with the help of a rare, magical, dragon-like creature that imprints on Matt as a caretaker; a dwarf; and wizards, Matt and his companions work hard to learn the skills they need to prepare for their ultimate showdown. Written one year ago by sixteen-year-old Carney, this self-published novel shows the beginnings of a sophisticated writing style, but it lacks the depth that comes with maturity and the quality provided by professional assistance. The plot moves in fits and starts, so that it builds too late to a poor climax, leaving most of the important revelations packed into the last ten pages. Peopled with stock and unnecessary secondary characters who lack strength and imagination, readers are left with little to which they can connect. Colloquial modern dialogue, paired with grammatical and editing errors, makes the text jarring and stylistically awkward. Although Paolini's fans might find some themes here to enjoy and despite a portion of the sales going to a charitable foundation, this novel should be a low priority for library acquisition.
