This book is a wonderful addition to the crusty detective tradition. It kept my suspense level high -- a real page-turner. Mann weaves an elaborate fabric of plot threads that spread out, over-lap, curve around and are tied together in an extremely satisfying and artful way. Boxer, is a complex new take on the archetypal anti-hero -- both engaging and repulsive. It was a great escape, and, hopefully, the first of many. Was this review helpful? Marlowe, Hammer, Scudder and, now... Boxer. What a find! Steven Mann has, without a doubt, created fiction¿s next great detective. A hard-boiled, hard-drinking ex cop who is sometimes difficult to love--but impossible to resist. Between belts of whiskey, Boxer follows a twisting (and sometimes twisted) plot through the underbelly of L.A., battling crooked lawyers, drug lords and his own demons. As a human being, Boxer is as flawed as they come. As a character, he¿s as close to perfect as you can get. Boxer may be a guy on the way down but he takes us on a hell of a ride! Thank you, Steve Mann! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

Cheers to Steven Mann for finally writing a mystery novel centered around a protagonist, Boxer, who is actually human, and someone with whom we can relate. Boxer is not an FBI agent, he is not a well-trained MD or some top-ranking lawyer. Rather, Boxer is an alcoholic investigator who has about as many problems as the people who hire him, the victims he seeks to find and the villains of the novel. That, coupled with the proper amount of humor and seriousness makes for an excellent book. Add to this that Mr. Mann has opted to divide his book into short, easy to read chapters - and you have an enjoyable reading experience. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
