What a great concept for a book! How many of us can claim to be the very first to do anything of any importance? Not many--that's how many. The world has far more second, third or fourth place finishers than first place. And as I found out in The First Book Of Seconds, the story of the Second Strongest Man in the World, or the Second Name for the Popsicle, the story of the second place runner up is sometimes more interesting and more entertaining than the First. Lots of people know famous firsts, but I was shocked by how little I knew about famous seconds. This book was a gift that came in the mail and the title and concept threw me, but as soon as I cracked it open and dug in it became a favorite bathroom book. The authors, Matthew Murrie and Steve Murrie clearly have a love of all things Second. The listings are informative but the tone is light, and each famous Second is followed an interesting addendum which is related to the subject. This is an ideal bathroom book, a term that sometimes gets frowned on, but it's by no means a slam. Why waste time staring at that stray cobweb up on the bathroom ceiling during your next bath, when you can be expanding your mind and having a good chuckle. Was this review helpful?
