Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 5-9-Two lively series entries that are generously illustrated with informative, captioned archival photographs and reproductions. Illuminating quotations and biographical sketches are included to help readers understand the significance and the historical context of the events being delineated. Across the United States tells the story of Calbraith Perry (Cal) Rodgers and his Vin Fiz, a Wright Type EX biplane. His 1911 flight from Sheepshead Bay, New York, to Long Beach, California, took 84 days total elapsed time, but nevertheless proved that the coast-to-coast journey could be done. Around the World is an account of Wiley Post and his Winnie Mae, a Lockheed Vega monoplane. Post took off from New York City, headed in a nor'westerly direction on July 5, 1933, returning on July 22. Howard Hughes called this achievement "`the greatest of all time.'" Both books should encourage reluctant readers to delve further into the history of aviation.-David A. Lindsey, Lakewood Junior/Senior High School, WA
