Overview

In Jason Mott's haunting and unforgettable debut novel, The Returned, an impossible miracle is occurring all across the globe. Read how it all begins in this short story, The First.

It's been just over a year since Edmund Blithe died, and just over a month since his fiancée, Emily, stopped wearing her engagement ring. Emily has finally begun to move on… Until Edmund mysteriously and inexplicably returns, sending the world—and Emily—into a tailspin.

Edmund is only just the beginning. Around the world, people's loved ones are returning from beyond, seeking only to reenter the lives they left behind. As the world dives deep into uncertainty, Emily and Edmund are determined to find their way back to one another…even if it means risking everything.

The reappearances continue in The Sparrow, and look for The Returned from Harlequin MIRA, a moving tale of a family given a second chance at life and a world where nothing—not even death—is certain.

I thought that this short story introduced a really fascinating concept! It was an original way to explore the limits and expectations of love and relationships. The story behind Emily and Edmund’s trauma seems to open up an entire new world for exploring human relationships and choices. And, even though there was a dramatic and fantastic topic at the heart of the story, I still thought that the characters and their reactions seemed realistic and relatable. It made me want to read more about them! Overall, I found this short story to be a well-explored glimpse into the lives of people who have the unthinkable happen to them.

    Hmmm...

What would you do if a loved one returned from the dead? How would you react? How would the world react? Not like any Harlequin book I've read before. Interested in reading more to see where this story goes but undecided about whether I like the storyline or not.

    Really

This very short story is only 11 pages long, choppy and incomplete. It is supposed to be an introduction to the book 'The Returned'. How some reviewers can consider it a book is beyond me. I will not even keep it in my library, deleting it instead.

This is the first of three e short prequels to Jason Mott's high

This is the first of three e short prequels to Jason Mott's highly anticipated debut, THE RETURNED.
In "The First" we meet Edmund Blithe, the first Returned. His story is a strange one but one that will be mirrored across the world very soon.
It's a nice story to set the tone for the book itself, but of the three tales on offer it wasn't my favorite. They are nice little extras, though. Each of the stories do include an excerpt of THE RETURNED.
