Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Partridge
This book of science experiments is exceptionally clear and easy to read. Each experiment begins with an intriguing question, such as "What makes invisible ink appear?" There are key words and a list of materials in their own boxes, with step-by-step directions explaining what to do. These are followed by some thought provoking queries about what happened, and then a satisfying explanation for everything. Safety First tips give commonsense advice about cleanliness and sharp tools in the materials list, and Brain Busters extend the experiments and encourage further exploration. Simply drawn illustrations might have been better in color, but they serve their purpose pretty well. Sections are entitled Air, Chemistry, Water, and Weather. A glossary and index complete a well rounded, intelligent introduction to scientific methods. The experiments would work well in a classroom, preceded by a general discussion and then carried out by small groups of children, or equally as well for involved parents, or homeschoolers. All of the materials used are commonly found and should not be too hard for parents or teachers to obtain.
