It began in 1914 as a skirmish between one major power, Austria-Hungary, and the tiny Balkan state of Serbia. Sparked by the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand of Austria, it developed within one year into an all-out military conflict involving Russia, Germany, France, Britain, Japan and Turkey. By 1917 even the United States joined in the fighting. The First World War (1914-1918)--known to many as World War I and the Great War--drastically changed the course of European history and forever shaped the world view of warfare itself. The First World War, a volume in Facts On File's acclaimed Eyewitness History series, provides hundreds of firsthand accounts of the war--from memoirs, speeches, letters and newspapers, which illustrate how historical events appeared to those who lived through them. Among the eyewitness testimonies included are those of Otto von Bismarck, Marshal Joseph Joffre, Lenin, T. E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia), Woodrow Wilson and hundreds more. In addition to the firsthand accounts, each chapter provides an introductory essay and a chronology of events. The book also includes three appendixes--which consist of 56 documents, capsule biographies of more than 200 key figures, and five maps--a bibliography, an index and 75 photographs.

YA-- Accessible primary-source material. Each chapter opens with an overview of the specific time period and/or geographic region being discussed, followed by a chronology of dates before moving to excerpts of speeches, letters, official documents, and newspaper articles relating to that section. Authors vary from famous leaders to privates in the trenches. The appendixes provide documents, maps, and biographical sketches. The index refers to specific people, places, ships, battles, but not to general topics.
