Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Married people experience love most strongly through five love languages--quality time, words of encouragement, gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. With thoughtfulness and a gee-whiz tone that works well in all his audios, Gary Chapman aims his insights at men who want more from marriage, as well as those who have more to give. He’s a humble teacher, describing the five languages with satisfying examples from his counseling practice and framing his ideas as suggestions. Without making light of the work a marriage requires, he’ll convince most men that, if they love their wives, they can easily express it in ways that can make a marriage truly special for everybody."

Read an Excerpt

Welcome to the real world of marriage, where hairs are always on the sink and little white spots cover the mirror, where arguments center on which way the toilet paper comes off and whether the lid should be up or down. It is a world where shoes do not walk to the closet and drawers do not close themselves, where coats do not like hangers and socks go AWOL during laundry. In this world, a look can hurt and a word can crush. Intimate lovers can become enemies, and marriage a battlefield. The purpose of this book is not to eliminate all confusion surrounding the word love, but to focus on that kind of love that is essential to our emotional health. I am convinced that keeping the emotional love tank full is as important to a marriage as maintaining the proper oil level is to an automobile.

    I Also Recommend:

    Good reading for men.

I found a lot of great advice from this book. The author really knows what points to hit on and which ones to leave alone. This is good for any guy who wants to be a better man in a relationship--even if he isn't in one yet.

    Excellent

I bought it for my husband. He said it was great. It not only explained what he was doing wrong, it explained how step by step to do it right! He said that is unusual for a book to be so accurate and precise. He's been using the tools he's learned and has thanked me. There are things I tried to explain to him so many times but apparently i was speaking female. The author really does know how to speak to and reach his audience! Has enhanced our marriage greatly!

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Book

I liked that this was the "man" version. It is exactly the same book, except the cover looks more manly than the original purple and pink one. My husband wasn't as timid to read it when he saw the mild brown! Such a simple fix! Also, some of the "your spouse" lines were replaced with "your wife" since most likely it's men reading this version.

    I Also Recommend:

    Well, Right!

I read this book, I am a female, & found this edition more helpful in understanding both the concepts & the man's prospective on the concepts. I personally was impressed with how easily it read & the clarity in which it was written. Gary Chapman broke through the barriers of "lies" that so many buy into & set out some truths that set couples & individuals free. Sometimes you just have to read what you somehow, somewhere in the back of your head & in your heart, already know to actually see the light. This book was one of many for me. I highly recommend it even for those who are researching fields in marriage, how people feel and express love, intimacy building, understanding the human emotions and how they are felt and expressed, & so many more. We have added this to our "arsenal" package we sent many newly weds. At first they think it is pessimistic or silly, but eventually, they all love the gift!

    This is Great

This book should be a CD audio book, I know several men who would listen to the book but not read it. I wish I had known some of these languages of men while I was married and been able to share them with the man I was married to at the time. I can't help think things might be different now if we had known.

    Must Read for Everyone

A friend recommended this book. I don't usually read self help books but this book was fascinating. I couldn't put it down. It made sense out of the most common things and put it in language that everyone could understand. I'm recommending this book to all my friends. I'm even buying several copies to give away to those that I think could really use it.

    Now I Understand!

Everyone should read some version of this book. Whether you are single, married, a parent, a grandparent, a daughter, a friend, widowed, male or female. A light bulb went off in my head and now I know why relationships are the way they are and it's okay. I didn't know how to get through to my daughter, I didn't know why my husband didn't want to do the things I wanted to do and I didn't understand why my mother never hugged me. Their love languages are different than mine and now I see their love through a different language than I looked for before.
