Overview

Scarface's long-awaited debut for Def Jam South marks the rap veteran's strongest and most enjoyable material since his salad says in the Geto Boys. An invitingly radio-friendly disc, The Fix finds 'Face collaborating with such superstars as Jay-Z and Beanie Sigel, Nas, Kelly Price, and Faith Evans. But it's not the big names that make Scarface's seventh solo joint so intoxicating -- it's the funk-steeped production. In the spirit of the new Southern funk movement initiated by Goodie Mob and OutKast, the rapper energizes his gangsta fairytales with the rogue spirit of '70s blaxploitation and injects it with some old-school soul and lyrical urgency via samples of Gladys Knight and Roberta Flack on "In Cold Blood" and "On My Block," respectively. The Neptunes turn out one of their best slow jam grooves to date on the Faith Evans-assisted ballad "Someday," while the album's heavy-hitting title track sounds like it could have been cribbed from the Superfly soundtrack. After spending almost an entire decade lost in a purple haze of generic thuggery, this O.G. offers up a Fix that will hook listeners on his dope beats and rhymes.

Editorial Reviews

Vibe - Noah Callahan-Bever
With The Fix, Scarface makes a compelling argument that gangstas can, in fact, mature. More importantly, they can use that hard-won wisdom and experience to create some of the best music of their lives.
The Source
With a superb cross-section of hip-hop's best producers, singers and MCs riding shotgun, The Fix is an undeniable balance of street consciousness and mass appeal. Jeffrey Barrow
