Spatters of a Life: Chapter 5

    "How are they?"
The medicine cat only shrugged in reply. "Smokeshade's doing fine, but Flarefang and Ashpaw...I don't know."
With a nod, Burnedshard padded out into the clearing, trying to keep her composure. Gorsejump's body had been buried a few days ago. She took a piece of freshkill, but it was mostly for show; she felt sick from recent events, and hadn't really even eaten since BirchClan and the rogues attacked.
As she sat staring at her food–a sparrow, average weight, killed with blow rather than bite–a voice sounded behind her. "Why's he so special? What'd he ever do?"
It took Burnedshard a moment to register that it was Flywing, and he was addressing her and referring to Shardflight. "Sometimes we just have to accept that things are without knowing why," she answered, suddenly tired.
Flywing apparently didn't notice and snorted, "Well, this isn't one of those things. Why were those rogues so interested in him."
"I don't know!" she snapped back, overwhelmed by fatigue. "Can't you just accept that you're not omniscient?!" Then she paused and collapsed, unconscious before she hit the ground.
"I'm worried about her. She's been a warrior for not even half a moon now, and she's been dealing with all this stress..."
As Burnedshard awoke, she recognized Hazelstar's voice and kept her eyes closed, listening to the medicine cat's response. "But she's been dealing with it well. A little rest and she'll be leaping to join the next patrol."
"...No. She should stay in here for a few days. Eat, rest, regain her strength. I think it would do her well."
"...I understand, and you're right. As you wish." Then the padding of paws and the swish of the vines in the entrance, and Hazelstar was gone. Burnedshard immediately opened her eyes, looking defiantly at the medicine cat. "You can't keep me in here! You have to at least let me out in the forest every so often."
But the medicine cat's head was shaking before she's finished. "First, leader's word is law. You know that. Second, it's best for you to stay here. Please."
Reluctantly Burnedshard nodded, and as she lowered her head on her paws, another voice sounded behind her. "I know just how you feel."
Burnedshard whipped around, remembering that Smokeshade was there, too. 'Whoopee, an obnoxious roommate.' "Smokeshade. And how exactly would you know?"
He grinned, and she instantly thought of Rocky. 'The physique, the personality...they're so alike. '
"Sick. Lost. Alone. That's how you're feeling. I've had that feeling before."
She didn't bother hiding her skepticism. "Right. And you know everything about me." What she didn't admit was that he was right about her feelings. 'How could a fool I've barely met know me so well?'
He nodded casually. "Yup. Misery loves company, so it's pretty good at finding other misery."
Burnedshard didn't reply, deep in thought. 'Could my new roommate actually understand me so well? Even though we're from different Clans? Even though we're nearly complete opposites? Could he understand me like Shardflight couldn't?'
So I'd continue this chapter, but I'm running low on characters. Therefore, I had to end with something cliffhanger-y. Hey, but I called it on the timing. I predict...the next chapter will come ooout...by Monday! Meaning it could possibly come out Sunday! I'm trying to shorten that time gap between each chapter. So...I will see you by Monday and possibly on Sunday!
