When Danny's family gets together, it's always a mess. It's no different this Chanukah when an argument over a car erupts at the table. Arguing. Shouting. This. That. Oy, enough already!

But it only gets worse! When Uncle Izzy throws a latke out the window, the chaos really begins, as the FBI thinks it's a UFO and the air force tries to shoot it down!

If the Three Stooges had played the sons of Yiddish-speaking immigrants,they might have stepped into this slick shtick. The plot features feuding relatives who start a food fight on Hanukkah and pitch a latke out the window; the latke (don't ask) is mistaken for a UFO. Characters "plotz" and "fress" and "shmooze"--everything but play canasta. Steig's work is far in the background--literally. Using digital techniques, Yorinks (Hey, Al) with Colin treats Steig's drawings as a theater set and collages in photos of "actors" hamming it up (you should pardon the expression). With "parts" dealt out to Steig and his wife, artists Maurice Sendak and Vladimir Radunsky as well as children's publishing folk David Saylor and Judith Rovenger, the book has the tone of an in-joke, with an equally limited appeal. The unusual format of this book is worth noting--paintings with superimposed digital photos of people dramatizing the story, all computer-"composited" together. The story is presented as "broad farce" and will be either hilarious (if you know the language and enjoy the humor of the Catskills area) or a rather offensive portrait of a Jewish family whose inability to get along somehow turns a latke into a UFO so that there's no Hanukkah dinner. If you loved Professor Brainerd and Flubber, give it a try; but if you need a dictionary to understand eppes, fress, and plotz and shudder at fighting, name-calling relatives (the movie Diner was mild compared to this), choose something else.
