Reviews from previous editions: "A book that should find a place on the bookshelves of all physicians who care for diabetic patients." Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Joseph V. Gonzalez, DPM (Illinois Masonic Medical Center)
Description: This is an update to the 1994 edition, adding interesting chapters on creating a diabetic foot service and new concepts in management. It provides a thorough review of issues in the management of diabetic feet with insight from international specialists, mostly from the U.K.
Purpose: The purpose is to educate physicians on diabetic foot care issues and continue to encourage them to incorporate primary diabetic foot care into their healthcare districts in order to decrease the number of lower extremity amputations. This is a valuable single reference for all aspects of diabetic foot care. The authors present a large amount of information in a concise manner.
Audience: I feel the book is geared toward foot and ankle specialists (students, residents, and practitioners) with an active interest in treating patients with diabetic foot problems. The authors are well published on this subject.
Features: This book covers the entire spectrum of diabetic foot ulcerations, ranging from mild to severe, while also focusing on prevention. It is unique in its efforts to encourage and outline ways to develop diabetic foot services and its ability to present information from international specialists as well as the latest advances. The book does not go into overwhelming detail on many subjects, but it does provide valuable information in a concise manner with excellent references to the latest research. Most of the references are international.
Assessment: In comparison with Levin's The Diabetic Foot (Mosby, 1992), this book is geared more toward overall practice management issues while the Levin focuses more on the biochemical and physiological details of diabetes as it relates to the foot. This is a necessary update as many new concepts have been presented in the last six years. This is an excellent reference book for physicians treating patients with diabetic feet.
