A mother fox comes across an abandoned baby fox, nurses it, rescues it from danger and eventually can't tell him from her other three children. PW 's comment: ``Skofield's translation from the German preserves the lyrical, moving tenor of the original, a story with the power of a parable with Michl's realistic color pictures and sharp ink drawings.'' (4-8)

I use this rich, warm story when I get a new student. It welcomes our new friend and tells my entire class that new friends become a part of our classroom family, to the extent that I later forget who is new and who has simply always been ... in my heart.
