Overview

What happened on the Fourth of July long before there were fireworks and parades? Alice Dalgliesh takes young readers back to revolutionary times, back to the colonists' desire for freedom and the creation of the Declaration of Independence.

Simple text captures the excitement of the era, telling how word of Independence travelled up and down the thirteen colonies, touching the lives of everyday people throughout the land. Like all of Alice Dalgliesh's work, The Fourth of July Story remains an American classic.

The thirteen colonies unite in the desire for independence, select Thomas Jefferson to write the Declaration of Independence, and carry the news of independence across the colonial settlements.

A readable history of the 4th of July

This book does a great job of explaining why we celebrate the '4th of July'. It's written in plain and simple language. It gives enough of the story so that you know what's going on. It doesn't go too far into the details so that the kids aren't overwhelmed or bored. I loved that the author mentions that the statue of King George the Third was pulled down when word of the declaration reached George Washington and the troops. If film crews had been around at that time, we would have seen images of this, as we did with Sadam, Lenin, etc.
