Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
British aromatherapist Lawless (Encyclopedia of Essential Oils) has previously written about the use of essential oils, aromatherapy, and herbalism for physical and emotional healing. Here, she expands her focus to growing and using scented plants, tracing the history of the scented garden from the courtyards of ancient Persian palaces to medicinal monastic gardens and contemporary English and American gardens. Chapters are devoted to aromatic borders and exotic greenhouse plants, and Lawless classifies the scents of flowers, leaves, and woods. She updates the old-fashioned still room to make potpourri, toilet water, and body oils. For a supply of fragrant plants for healing properties, as well as a peaceful haven for reflection, Lawless also offers guidance for creating an aromatherapy garden. Over 50 aromatherapy plants are described with information on cultivation instructions, recommended species, and home uses for each. Her descriptions of herb gardens for health and cooking also include lists of herbs and recipes. If your library can afford only one book in this area, Emelie Tolley's Herbs: Gardens, Decorations, and Recipes is the one to own, while Louise Beebe Wilder's The Fragrant Garden (Dover, 1974) still has the most extensive list of scented plants. Fragrant Garden is recommended for public libraries.-Nancy Myers, Univ. of South Dakota Lib., Vermillion Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
