    History lives

    This was a good read if you enjoy historical heroines. This story combines passion and intrigue as well as the struggles of Catholics in England.

    I enjoyed it!

    Once again Susan Holloway has written a fine historical novel about a highly-placed seventeeth-century woman. Louise de Keroualle is the daughter of impoverished but genteel French nobility. When she is called to the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV, to serve his sister-in-law, the charming Mademoiselle, her parents send her off in highs hopes that she will marry a wealthy man and restore the family fortunes. This is not to be, for on a trip to England with Mademoiselle (who is Charles II's sister) Louise catches the king's eye and eventually becomes his mistress. The French monarch regards this as a fine opportunity for her to serve France by keeping an eye on the political situation in England. Little tension arises from this in the book, however, since Charles II seems to be already aware of her "second job". One enjoyable aspect of this novel is that the first half takes place in the glittering French court, and the second in the more relaxed English court, so the reader experiences life in both. The story is told in the first person, and though Louise manages to make several irritating references to how gracefully and charmingly she (and her gowns)curtsy, kneel, and so on, she's likeable enough. And the reader will sympathize with the slings and arrows she endures while in England, whose public generally loathed her. Not Ms. Holloway's best book, but still hard to put down.
