This startlingly good book about work and men and small towns stirred me greatly. The women are portrayed vividly and sometimes sadly, but the book is mostly about men and work. They are heroes and rascals at the same time. I came to care about all of them. Richards deserves a winder audience that just as a "Canadian writer".
