Editorial Reviews

Booknews
In the 11 years between the first (1981) and second editions fungal ecology has progressed, in some cases spectacularly, and much of the material in the first edition has become dated. Half of the present contributions are entirely new, as are 80% of the authors, and the volume is now based on contributed chapters rather than on presentations from an international meeting (the Second International Mycological Congress). The objective remains that of interfacing mycological data with ecological theory, and the present edition comprises 44 contributed chapters in nine parts: fungal ecology and ecological theory; fungal populations, environmental parameters, and the niche concept; the organization of fungal populations and communities; species interactions in fungal communities; fungal community development; fungal influences on plant community dynamics; fungal biomass and productivity in ecosystems; fungi in nutrient cycling; and mycological systems for examining ecological ideas.
