Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Borrowing from classic "natural childbirth" philosophers Read, Leboyer, and Lamaze, Texas obstetrician Cole offers a refreshing perspective on the power of the mind over reproduction with a spiritual emphasis on conception, pregnancy, and childbirth. Spirituality here does not have religious overtones but instead involves visualization, positive thinking, loving thoughts, and meditation to help with conception and delivery. The mind-body connection to one's child and the power of love are Cole's prescription for a warm, gentle hospital birth. Family involvement is encouraged, as is the woman's right to the type of birth she envisions. Cole encourages the use of alternative therapies such as acupuncture, aromatherapy, and chiropractic intervention for pain management while acknowledging the standard medical ones (yes, he approves of epidurals when needed). He also discusses water births and cesareans. Unique in its focus on spirituality and not redundant even if you own the works of Leboyer et al., all of whom he discusses, this book is recommended for public libraries and for all medical collections.Lisa A.
