Overview

Mexico's butterfly-filled forests, beaches covered with nesting sea turtles, mineral-colored lakes, smoldering volcanoes, whale birthing grounds, and once-sacred underground wells all combine to create a rainbow of national parks and natural wonders. Like a kaleidoscope, Mexico's national parks and natural wonders are constantly changing. They are also, like Mexico, unique and diverse. Mexico's geography is, indeed, an ever-changing kaleidoscope of beauty and diversity.\

With over 760,000 square miles, Mexico is a land of many different geographical faces. The Chihuahuan Desert offers white sand and dry, hot air. The tropical areas of Mexico, sitting about 3,000 feet above sea level, average 77 degrees. Above those, the plateau region in central Mexico averages about 60 degrees. Throw into the mix volcanoes, six months with little or no rain, hurricanes, tsunamis, and tropical storms, and you have the mixture for a unique landscape. Counter that with the coral reefs, beautiful sandy beaches, wonderful mountains, and even a rain forest to create an environment that attracts many to the country. This book is a part of the "Our Southern Neighbor Mexico" series. 2003, Mason Crest Publishers, Ages 10 to 18.

Gr 5-8-Slim, basic overviews. Influential leaders and the country's tumultuous changes from dictatorship to democracy to the election of President Vicente Fox in 2000 are covered in Government. Facts discusses both the history of the nation and life today, explaining that poverty is a huge problem. Information on each of the 31 states is also given, along with colorful maps. In Economy, manufacturing, farming, natural resources, and tourism are the focus of separate chapters. Discussion of NAFTA's impact on the country is included, as is Fox's election. Climate, topography, regions, and natural wonders are some of the topics examined in Geography. All of the books are illustrated with a number of clear, color photos with informative captions; some also include black-and-white archival shots and reproductions. The attractive layouts feature pastel pages framed with white borders, bold headings, and an occasional colorful sidebar offering additional tidbits. The breakdown of information into separate titles will be useful for students focusing on specific topics. However, libraries on limited budgets may find Facts the best buy since it touches on all of these topics.-Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
