Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: David O. Staats, MD (University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center)
Description: This is a multiauthored book about interdisciplinary care of older persons based on a conference in 1996.
Purpose: The purpose is to demonstrate the interdisciplinary nature of caring for older persons and to demonstrate the spectrum of this care.
Audience: The audience for this book is geriatricians, gerontologists, other healthcare professionals working with older persons, and policy makers.
Features: This book is fairly textually oriented.
Assessment: While the contributors do represent the spectrum of professionals caring for older persons, most of the discussion is from the individual contributor's area of expertise. On the whole, this book is tedious with little to glue the chapters together.

Clair (sociology and medicine, U. of Alabama) and Allman (medicine, U. of Alabama) present 15 contributions which attempt to underline the assumption that the aging individual and society can be enhanced by an understanding of the correlates of basic social, behavioral, demographic, economic, political, ethical, and biomedical processes involving aging. The authors come to the topic from the a variety of medical fields, as well as social sciences such as sociology, history, and psychology. The goal is to encourage efforts towards an integrated interdisciplinary approach to gerontology. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
