The Get Down Boogie Sound

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
What is the "Get Down Boogie Sound?" Simply speaking, it is the sound that arrived just after disco and just before Prince revolutionized the whole idea of funk, bringing it into the future. What is the "Get Down Boogie Sound?" Simply speaking, it is the sound that arrived just after disco and just before Prince revolutionized the whole idea of funk, bringing it into the future. This is music thoroughly engaged with the present and that present is the early '80s, where the future seemed a given and analog synthesizers were necessities, not fashion accessories. Much of the music on The Get Down Boogie Sound is driven by synthesizers -- sometimes, vocals are synthesized and processed -- but the rhythms are elastic and energetic, bearing all the hallmarks of loose, live instrumentation. It's disco as performed by live bands, which means it has a palpable kinetic energy that ties it to classic '70s soul, but this music was made at the intersection where R&B started to get stripped-down and electrified, yet was still performed by full bands. In his notes, compiler Julian Jonah explores the details of these differences, giving credit to these otherwise forgotten artists, and this bit of scholarly research gives The Get Down Boogie Sound weight, but this 13-track collection is best seen as a joyous party that doesn't stop until the wee hours of the morning.
