Overview

Men in Black meets Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum in the fourth urban fantasy novel in the series starring seer Makenna Fraser and her fellow agents at Supernatural Protection & Investigation.

The agents of Supernatural Protection & Investigations (SPI) are paid to keep the peace. But that’s not so easy when an endless evil threatens to tear that peace to pieces...

A vampire gangster’s nephew is abducted off his yacht by a bunch of low-rent Creatures from the Black Lagoon. A slew of banks are knocked over by what looks like the cast of Night of the Living Dead. All of this may seem like the movies, but, I promise you, it’s not.

I’m Makenna Fraser, seer for SPI, and I know the culprits aren’t wearing disguises or makeup. They’re real. Deadly real. Especially their leader—an ancient shapeshifter who leaves a trail of chaos and blood in his wake. Now, he’s taken my partner, Ian—and his intentions aren’t pretty.

The worst part? This is only the beginning...

The beginning of the end of the human race.

Shearin’s fun fourth SPI Files supernatural mystery (after The Brimstone Deception) moves the series forward but gets bogged down in the weight of what came before. Seer Makenna Fraser is an agent for the Supernatural Protection and Investigation Agency, based out of New York. She’s out for a date with her dark mage ghoul boyfriend, Rake, hobnobbing with the rich, elite, and supernatural, when a kraken attacks and their host is kidnapped by sea monsters. The attack proves to be just the opening foray in the lead-up to a cataclysmic plot perpetuated by the recurring nemesis of Ian, her SPI partner. While the stakes grow dire and the enigmatic enemy taunts the SPI, Makenna must rally her forces to prevent apocalypse. The book is bloated with references to events from earlier in the series, so new readers will find it easy to catch up, but it’s hard to become immersed. Makenna is charmingly quippy, though, and Shearin delivers a pulpy good time for undemanding readers. (Jan.)

Headquartered in New York City, the agents of Supernatural Protection & Investigations (SPI) serve as the paranormals' law enforcement around the world. Makenna Fraser is a seer for SPI, using her power to suss out the supernatural bad guys. While on a (reconnaissance) date with goblin boyfriend Rake Danescu aboard the yacht of a vampire gangster's nephew and heir, Makenna and Rake are forced to watch said heir be kidnapped by swamp creatures and a kraken. At the same time, ghouls embark on a bank robbing spree in mid-Manhattan. Last but not least, Makenna's partner Ian is seized by the leader of these crime sprees, a shapeshifter whose ultimate goal is the destruction of humankind. Featuring plenty of fast-paced action and smart humor, Shearin's fourth SPI book (after The Brimstone Deception) highlights her heroine's sassy nature and supernatural strengths. VERDICT Urban fantasy fans who enjoy a touch of romance and a lot of wit will be delighted with this series.—KC

I loved this book! I also loved the little tie-ins with the Raine Benares novels as well. This book went a long way toward tying together other books in this series. Keep up the good work!

Makenna, Ian, Rake and the rest of the SPI are once again investigating and combating a threat to human and paranormal alike. A nice addition to a good series. The characters are well rounded, the plot interesting and the pace is good.

I absolutely love this series! Mac and Ian and Rake and all the characters are so much fun, I can’t get enough of them. Book four connects things that have been happening in the series so far, from the jewelry heist that brought Ian to SPI, to the dragon eggs, to the mysterious, multi-faced creature that seems to be stalking Ian. Mac gets to play the hero this time, instead of the damsel, which is awesome! And we learn more even more about Rake and his intentions toward Mac. So does Mac, which means the romance fans have something to look forward to. I adore it when a book in a series pulls together the elements of previous stories, and The Ghoul Vendetta does it beautifully. I feel a whole series reread coming on very soon!
