Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
This comprehensive set of poetry CDs, spanning the classic to the contemporary, is divided into five broad themes, each represented by approximately 40-50 poems from a variety of genres and time periods. While the majority of the poets are representative of the traditional British and American canon, there are some international and Native American authors. From the contemporary works of Billy Collins to the classic poems of Emily Dickinson, the notable names here are too numerous to list. The audio quality is excellent, and the works are read by 13 professional actors, so there is a nice vocal variety. While the dramatizations are well done overall, there are some readings where the narrators' choices for inflection are questionable and may not appeal to all listeners. The only other noticeable flaw is that the packaging does not provide enough information about the poets and poems, which makes it difficult for listeners to locate a particular author or work. Even so, this program provides a nice companion to any traditional anthology and will be of great use in the classroom at both the high school and college level. Recommended for all collections.-Dawn Eckenrode, Daniel A. Reed Lib., SUNY at Fredonia Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
