Audio Storytelling Kits for Children of All Ages

For more than fifteen years, Sounds True teachers have captivated adults with world wisdom as it was meant to be shared -- in the oral tradition. Now, Sounds True is proud to present Secrets of the World, our first-ever series of titles for children of all ages.

Secrets of the World audio storytelling kits are much more than audio books. They being by inviting children and parents to listen to the words of a "Whisperer" -- one who listens to the secrest of the world and shares them with others. Weaving traditional and personal stories from their cultures with original world music, these gifted storytellers take us on an intimate journey into tales of discovery and delight that awakened them as children.

Then, with a set of unique story trading cards, it's time for children to take on the role of storyteller themselves. Each beautifully illustrated story trading card contains special instructions to guide children -- with their family and friends -- to create and tell their own stories.

With some of the most gifted and entertaining Whisperers from across the globe -- including East Indian, Irish, Native American, and African-American traditions -- Secrets of the World is poised to sweep children and parents alike into faraway places and fascinating cultures -- and onward into the worlds of their own limitless imagination.

Each audio storytelling kit includes:

Poster -- a full-color 12" x 15" poster with original artwork from the series

Story Trading Cards -- to inspire children's imaginations so they can create their own stories

Teachings -- on the back of each poster; encourages children to learn about the people, places, language, and culture of the featured storytelling tradition

Two Audiocassettes -- two 45-minute cassettes with original music, featuring world wisdom tales told by world-famous storytellers

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-5-Noted storyteller Laura Sims tells 11 stories from Georgia, Romania, and Northern Poland in this collection. In warm, expressive tones, the stories are a mix of Sims' personal experiences growing up in Brooklyn surrounded by immigrants from these countries and traditional folktales from the Black Sea area. Many of the tales employ a kind of magical realism, as in "Grandma Ida's Diamond Earrings," where young Laura receives the "Gift of Dreams" when her grandmother plucks two stars from the sky and puts them in her ears. Sim's personal stories provide appropriate lead-ins to the more traditional tales, offering background and context. "The Red Fish," a Georgian tale, tells of a fisherman's son whose kindness to animals is repaid when he must hide from an all-seeing princess. Dreams are a constant theme throughout the stories, from "Baragladdin, the Gypsy Boy," who spends his life searching for the gold at the end of the rainbow, to "The Dreamer," a story from Georgia which combines familiar elements from the biblical story of Joseph and special talents of "The Seven Chinese Brothers." Some shorter, humorous tales are included as well ("The Stupid People of Auch" and "Nasruddin"). In the final, surprisingly affecting "The Queen of Everything," a king's youngest son succeeds in healing his father and securing the aid of the titular queen. Mysterious background music, combined with Sims' lulling tones, add to the dreamy atmosphere of these tales.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, Eldersburg, MD Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
