Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Giraffes, giraffes...come to think of it, they don't make any kind of sound, right? Guess again, smarty-pants -- they crow like roosters! Well OK, maybe not usually, but in Keith Faulkner and Jonathan Lambert's cheery pop-up book, silent Giraffe awakens one morning to find he can cock-a-doodle-doo like the best of them.

In fact, Giraffe isn't the only jungle animal whose voice is a little strange. All the beasts have traded sounds: Rooster finds himself roaring like a lion; courageous Lion is making tiny mouse squeaks; Elephant's trumpets have turned into snake hisses; Snake is squawking like a parrot; and Parrot has taken over the jungle trumpeting. And to make matters worse, they've all begun arguing about what's going on. After hearing all this, gentle Giraffe swallows hard and comes out with his loud cock-a-doodle-doo -- the other animals realize their friend finally has a voice! But just as quickly as the magic comes, it vanishes overnight, restoring the animals' regular sounds and leaving Giraffe with a great memory.

Faulkner and Lambert's book has both a simple, entertaining story and fun pop-ups. Kids will be squawking and hissing as they read along, and the cartoonish animals jump out at you for extra laughs. Just be sure to keep this book away from your local rooster, though -- it might start greeting the sunrise with a loud ROAR. (Matt Warner)

    Colorful and Fun

This is a darling book that engages children immediately. My 3 1/2 and 16 month old granddaughters loved the story. The older one responded to the questions in the story and laughed as we read about each animal's voice. The younger one especially loved the colorful pop-ups that clearing showed each animal. A delightful book!
