Fourteen year old Angelina Freyer, born in Africa, growing up on a Kenyan farm, close friend of the Masai and Swahili, knows the bush like the back of her hand.
When she, along with twelve international tourists are stranded in the back of beyond after their plane crashes and goes missing for two weeks, nobody but Angelina knows how to stay alive or effect a self-rescue.
But some of the adults dissent, ridiculing her and arguing that she's not old enough to know what she's doing.
Her aunt, Maudie Freyer, Johannesburg financial executive, who invited Angelina on the ill-fated charter flight, backs her up, warning the dissenters not to make trouble.
The situation deteriorates when Ira Illingworth, London architect, sly, easy living philanderer, steals a cache of uncut diamonds being smuggled from the Botswana diamond fields to Lusaka.
The gang of smugglers, armed and ruthless, hunt the tourists down, forcing Angelina to lead the party away from the crash site and flee into the bush.
Retired Brits, Mr and Mrs James, on the holiday of their lifetime, but who ignore her warning, are the first to be executed by the gang.
Professor Jason Dlamini, black South African anthropologist, editing the manuscript of a thesis he carries in his briefcase, buys the group a brief respite by disguising himself as a labourer returning to his tribal land.
Pieter and Anna Snyder from Dar es Salaam. She’s giddy-headed. He’s a tough building contractor who swears if he had a rifle, he would take the gang on single handed. He gets his chance.
Eighteen year old David Clegg, student at Montreal University, knows about rock climbing. Ultra-shy but smitten by Angelina, he teams up with her and the two teenagers form a synergy, challenging each other to think their way out of the situation.
Colin and Sheila Hendler, husband and wife bakers from Auckland. He jogs to his bakery every morning at three a.m., competes in marathons, and has the stamina to run mile after mile to stay in front of his pursuers.
Jacque and Vivian de Villiers from Calais. Own a sailing boat back home and know how to repair an old Nile felucca lying on the shores of Lake Kariba.
But it is Angelina's can-do attitude that drives everybody on.
Fraught with failure, a two-week, hundred-and-fifty-mile hike, cat-and-mouse escape led by her to Victoria Falls, takes its toll ... especially on those who don't believe a girl is capable of tweaking two lions' tails.
In the end however, the ordeal breaks this young girl.
