Wei Wei Shemilt was born in Beijing in 1954. She was awarded a Bachelor of Law from the Department of International Politics, Peking University and a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting & Finance from Southbank University, London. After leaving China she was the Managing Director of Hong Kong Branch, US travel company "China Passage", and later a radio broadcaster and producer for the Chinese Section of the BBC World Service in London.
She had two books published in Chinese in Hong Kong by Qin Jia Yuan Publishers in the 1990s: "Marketing in the Nineties" and "UK Property Investment Guide". She has had numerous short stories published in Chinese language newspapers and magazines in Hong Kong and the United Kingdom; one collection of these is currently on lulu.com. She also has had many articles and prose published in Chinese in the UK. She lives with her husband on the south coast of England.
This memoir is a faithful recording of her life in China from 1966 to 1983. Although narrated in the third person, all the events were observed first hand. The names of places are also accurate but the names of ordinary people in the story have been changed.
