Meet the Author

Vicki Iovine is the happy and chronically overwhelmed mother of four children under the age of thirteen.  Iovine was raised in Southern California and graduated Summa cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.  She attended law school at the University of California, Hastings College of Law, with some time off to study at Cambridge University in England.  After receiving an L.L.B. degree in Public International Law from Cambridge, she returned to Hastings to earn her J.D.  She is a member in good standing of the California Bar Association.

During her brief stint as a reporter with the now defunct Los Angeles Herald Examiner, she was assigned to write a story about the women who were competing to be Playboy’s 25th Anniversary Playmates.  “Having more brains than breasts, I didn’t win the contest, but I was asked to be Miss September,” says Iovine.  “Not only did I agree to show my naked body, but I wrote my own story to accompany the pictures.”  This was the first time Iovine was paid and published as a writer.

While raising four kids is full-time work, Iovine, 46, finds time to write a monthly column for Child magazine that addresses mothering concerns, and a bi-monthly column for Redbook on marriage and relationships.  She is the parenting contributor for “Today,” a frequent guest host on “Later Today”, and has appeared several times on “Oprah,” “Good Morning America,” and Barbara Walters’ “The View.”  Iovine also serves on the Board of Directors of Special Olympics International, the sports training program for people with mental retardation.  She was named the Florence Crittendon Woman of the Year for 1995 in recognition of her work for teenage mothers and for girls with mental retardation in South Central Los Angeles.  Iovine is also the author of the top-selling The Girlfriends’ Guide to Getting Your Groove Back, The Girlfriends’ Guide to Toddlers, The Girlfriends’ Guide to Surviving the First Year of Motherhood, The Girlfriends’ Guide to Pregnancy, as well as The Girlfriends’ Interactive Guide to Pregnancy CD ROM and The Girlfriends’ Guide to Pregnancy Daily Diary.

Iovine’s husband, Jimmy, is a former record producer who is now co-chairman and co-founder of Interscope Records, one of the nation’s fastest growing—and most cutting edge—independent record companies, which records best-selling rap and rock groups Dr. Dre, Nine Inch Nails, Black Street, No Doubt, Bush, Snoop Doggy Dogg, and the Wallflowers.

As prolific as they were in their professional lives, however, Vicki and Jimmy's first three and a half years of trying to start a family were decidedly unproductive.  Eventually, with the help of fertility treatment, Vicki got pregnant with their first son.  They clearly got the hang of it after that, having three more children in five years the good old-fashioned way.  Now, two boys and two girls later, the Iovines live a “rowdy and chaotic life” with Sunday football games on their front lawn and endless ferrying of children to t-ball games, birthday parties, tap dance rehearsals and assorted playdates.

“For the time being, knock wood, life is perfection,” says Iovine.  “I am getting to be what I always wanted to be when I grew up: a mother, a writer, and a teamster.”

Highly Recommended for first time moms

This book was essential for me to realize how normal a lot of what I was going through was--it validated everything I was feeling was 100% normal. This book let me laugh through my sleep-deprived chaos of a newborn.

trust me, you need a laugh!

Every mom with a newborn needs a chuckle, and this book provides it. Just the satisfaction of knowing you're not the only one dealing with _____ (fill in the blank)is priceless sometimes! I re-read it with each child.

    One woman's perspective on motherhood

This book was entertaining but not really helpful with parenting. It's just like a constant report on the daily undoings of the author's life. I much prefer books like LOVING MAMA that have real moms writing essays on real mothering issues, things that I can learn from.

A must-have for the new mom!

I read the first book by Vicki "the Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy". I enjoyed it so much I purchased this one at the time of my daughters birth. It was nice to know that many new mothers go through the same thing that I was going through myself. It made for good reading on those nights I was up all night with my newborn!

    This book is a riot...

I couldn't put this book down, and I'm not even a mother (or expecting)! An absolute riot.

Great Advice That Only Another Mom Could Give

This book explains the way you are feeling and helps you to know that you aren't alone. Other first time moms have felt the way you do. It really helped me out during my first weeks postpardom. It gave advice on everything from the hospital stay, to how to care for a newborn, to how to deal with inlaws. It is not a manual like what to expect the first year (which I also recommend) but it is exactly like the title says. A girlfriend who has been through what you are feeling already and her take on the situation. Overall it just lets you know you are not alone. GREAT BOOK definitely worth the read!!
