“Some moments are like bruises…Dark and deep and so malformed that even once the color fades back to normal, when the blood flattens and the bump erodes and you begin to recognize the skin as yours again, you remember the moment it happened. That unexpected pain. And you do your best to avoid it forevermore.”

In the second installment of the Spellspinners saga, Lily’s worldview is rocked by fear, mistrust, and heartbreak, as she deals with the fallout from the night of her enchantment.

Someone powerful is determined to keep her and Logan apart. But who? And why?

As the covens prepare to do battle in the Solstice Stones, the lines between good and evil, dark and light, begin to blur. Allegiances are called into question. Trust is broken. And all Lily knows may just be an illusion.

Will the star-crossed lovers unearth the seeds of betrayal before it’s too late? Or will the witches and warlocks of Melas County be forced to say goodbye to their magic—and any chance of reconciliation between the covens—for good?

In The Gleaning, nothing is as it seems. And Lily and Logan will have to tread carefully if they hope to uncover the truth in time to save their love and break the curse.

What’s Cool from Coliloquy:
The Gleaning is the second installment of The Spellspinners Of Melas County, an Active Fiction series from Coliloquy. Throughout the series, author Heidi R. Kling uses a unique interactive format to augment the typical reading experience.

Lily and Logan’s fate is already decided, but Heidi explores several different possible pathways for how they get there. She shares scenes that wouldn’t normally fit in a book format and gives readers more precious moments between the two young lovers. As the series progresses, you’ll see some normal narrative forms, interspersed with smaller scenes, alternate points of view, and a lot of “what if” scenarios.

This is the second book in the series, and I decided to take a different approach. As in the first book, this story is told with a special twist – an interactive experience akin to those “choose your own adventure” books from your childhood (or MY childhood at least. How old am I again??). Anyway, last time I felt the need to reread the story, to find out what happened with all the other choices. It affected my enjoyment of the story. So THIS time, I just went through it once. It is driving me NUTS not knowing everything I missed! But I definitely enjoyed it more. I wonder how long until I give in and go back for a peek….
In this sequel, we’re given a look into the past of the witches and warlocks. I am definitely dying to find out how everything became so messed up for them! There is also confusion and betrayal, and who doesn’t love a little tension?! What I did miss, was the romance. Lily and Logan are being kept apart (at least in the version I read), and I missed their banter and their chemistry. See? Now I’m starting to talk myself into reading another version, to see if they get more time together!
And the ending. *sigh* Heidi Kling is seriously the master of a cliffhanger! There I was, feeling so thrilled that this giant battle was about to happen, and then it’s left like that?! ACK! It’s official. I’m hooked. I NEED the next book, because I can’t possibly go on with my everyday, mundane, non-magical life without knowing what happens!

I would like the thank the author for offering me a copy of The Gleaning in exchange for an honest review

The Gleaning starts off right where Witch's Brew left us... and I love it when a story jumps right back into the action without missing a beat. I had so many questions about the curse, the warlocks, doppelgangers, and well just about everything by the end of book 1 that I was happy to be able to start the second book right away!

After reading book 1 I had a better idea of what to expect with the choose your own adventure part of this series, and although I'm personally not a huge fan of this type of book anymore, I made myself look past it and just enjoy the path I chose at the time. Even if you don't like having the choice between two paths in a story (personally I get too curious about the other one before I can commit to a choice) this series is still definitely worth a read.

I enjoyed that The Gleaning was full of action and it moved along at a quick pace while still answering some of my questions about the past. I loved getting some of the back story on the amulets, and especially Logan's childhood. I feel like I got more insight into Logan, Lily, and the coven that just hooked me even further into the story. I loved that everyone wasn't necessarily what they seemed at first (and have to admit that I guessed a few of the characters would turn out the way they did). I still enjoy a good villain in a story, and Jacob made me hate/love him even more in this story with his evil ways.

We finally get to find out the mystery behind The Gleaning in this book, and I think that it was a really unique twist on the usual good vs. evil story line. Lily grew on me in book 2 and I didn't find myself quite as annoyed with some of her decisions this time... she still managed to make some mistakes but no one can be perfect (it wouldn't be very exciting).

I'm excited to continue this series, and can not wait for book 3. There was yet another huge cliffhanger at the end, and I have a feeling I'm in for a few more of those before this series is over... but it'll definitely keep me hooked.
