Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Julie guards her heart and her widowed father as well as the net on her soccer team: "Eloquently crafted in simple, direct prose, this book is both hard-hitting and a joy to read," said PW in a starred review. Ages 8-up. (Apr.)
Children's Literature - Trina Heidt
Julie has been in charge of the MacNeil family for almost as long as she can remember. She has also been a competitive soccer player for just about as long. When her father starts dating Eliza True, Julie feels that her status in the family is being threatened, but that's not the worst of it. Eliza's son, Benji, ends up to be Julie's main competition for the goalie position on the local soccer team. Shreve has sculpted a wonderfully realistic and hopeful family story about finding new love while still cherishing the old.
School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-Julie was three and her sister Tally was an infant when their mother was killed in an automobile accident. Since then, Julie has focused on being the responsible one, the one to take charge in her mother's absence. This story takes place when the girl is in the fifth grade, and her father's developing friendship/romance with Eliza True, the mother of a classmate, makes Julie hostile and resentful. To make matters worse, Eliza's son Benji gets the goalie spot on the soccer team that Julie had her heart set on. In this fairly short book, Shreve strings together a succession of vivid moments. Her characterizations, plotting, and dialogue are all skillfully done. The two sisters are especially real, and Julie's very gradual process of acceptance seems authentic. In a successful balancing act, the author gives enough detail to keep things interesting, yet never wastes a word. Those expecting a sports story from the title and the jacket will be disappointed: the soccer action is really only described in detail near the end, when Julie fills in for Benji at a championship game. Still, this touching and absorbing novel will not disappoint.-Lauralyn Persson, Wilmette Public Library, IL
