    Nook won't open it

I would really like to read it but I can't open it, downloaded several times. I am surprised B&N still offers it. You would think they would pull it until the problem is solved. I wonder if anyone at Halcyon ever tested the file on a Nook before offering it. And, I wonder if B&N will ever officially respond to the problem.

    Same problems as everyone else

Cannot open this book - would love to read it and actually review it's contents, but, as others have posted before me, it will not open, and the nook sits idle for a long, long, long time.

Can't open this ebook on my Nook!

I purchased this ebook the evening of Oct. 6, 2010. When I tried to open it, the Nook would sit there with the message "Opening your book", and nothing would happen. I tried all the suggestions one could find on the web: do a complete power shutdown; archive and then unarchive; etc. After working on the problem for 2 days, I visited my local Barnes and Noble. They were very helpful, and spent 45 minutes repeating everything I had done. Then they tried to open the book on one of their Nooks, and found it wouldn't open either. They believe there is a problem at the publisher's end, which they believe will be resolved soon.

This looks like a very good book. I gave it one star merely because I have yet been unable to open it.

    Do not recommend

This book takes about 10 minutes to open, and appears to be seriously slowing down my ability to searchin my nook.

Badly built EPUB causes slow load times making this unreadable

The problem with this book, and all others in the series, is when it was converted to EPUB format they didn't build the archive with separate .html content files for each story/chapter, thus all the content is jammed into a single content block. this results in the nook software having to parse the whole huge file every time it does anything. The publishers could fix the problem easily by simply breaking the file into proper chapters. Since each book in the series has 50 separate stories this would also make the books better in terms of naturally leading to a proper table of contents so you could jump to a particular story without waiting 5 minutes or locking up the machine. It's a shame, it seems like such a nice collection of old science fiction.

    Poorly Formatted

Halcyon seems to lack consistency in how their eBooks are formatted. In this volume (IV), the paragraphs have no space between them, and they are not indented. The text is full-justified. This makes for somewhat difficult reading. In addition, the Metadata TOC is entirely missing. A collection book like this should definitely have one. The font in this book is smaller than it is in Volume V. Best to let the fonts be their default sizes, so that all eBooks have the same font size in accordance with the user's global setting. Why the lack of consistency? Isn't there a "suggested practices" guide for ePub documents? The book is DRM free, so I should be able to fix it up in Sigil, but not everyone can do that, and we shouldn't have to.

    more from this reviewer

    Don't get Halcyon Press books!

I found three books from this publisher that I really would like to have read. Unfortunately none of them will open. I had thought it might be due to the size of the files, but other books I have downloaded that are equally large are fine. All three of these hang up my Nook, and the only way I can get out of it is to turn the device off. I tried going through the techs with the first one, but nothing worked. I went to check a review of one of the books, only to discover that everyone who downloaded the book had that problem. This reader was told it is a problem on the publisher's end and once it gets solved, the books will open. So now I have three books that look great and enticing, but can't get open. I'm only giving this one star, but I'm sure I'd rate it higher if I could read it.

    Good stories, bad paging software

This book had some very interesting stories that I had been looking for for a long time. It was too bad the paging software left me stuck a hundred pages short of the end of the book. Now only one page is viewable and none of the fixes works this time! Restarting your Nook from a "hard" shutdown frequently might prevent that. Overall, a good read, but a little frustrating

    Terrible navigation

I got my Nook for this series. Do not be ripped off! The entire navigation is a jumbled mess. Page one is not page one. Page two is page 60 or 182 depending on its mood. Pages 2-59 are inaccessable. Table of contents takes you to random parts of the book in the middle of a story.

    Great book, so-so epub

    These are some great stories.

As far as the epub goes, however, the table of contents links on the Nook don't line up to the correct stories. If you don't mind paging through manually, or if you're going to read it straight through anyway then it doesn't matter.

    No paragraph breaks!!

There are no breaks between paragraphs, which are not indented, making for tedious reading. And of course since it's DRM, no way to fix it. Very obnoxious.

    Great old stories!

Fortunately, I didn't have any problems loading or opening this book on my Nook. The stories, although somewhat dated (Everybody smoked; in one story, cigarettes are the cure for a plague!), are very good for the most part. For the price, I would recommend this book.

Good but "contents" search is messed up

Apparently only the word "contents" is usable for the search which makes it very difficult to locate a specific author or story within the book. The first tale is a long one so bear with it. Would like to see the "content" search modified to enable search by story.

Many TOC links go to the wrong chapter

Most of the table of contents links point to the wrong chapter (book). Hopefully someone will get this fixed - then I will update my rating.
It would be nice if this review mechanism had a way to notify B&N of technical problems.

The loading problem is fixed! (10/25/2010)

I had the same problem as everyone. The book now load fine, although there are still some issues with using the table of contents (some of the items work, some do not) but at least the book seems usable now.
