Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Mr. Roly-Poly and his quest to create a Big Top of his own feature in the paper-over-board The Golden Circus (1950) by Kathryn Jackson, illus. by Alice and Martin Provensen. Youngsters will delight in running their fingers over the fuzzy patches of elephant skin and lion's fur on the touch-and-feel pages, while Provensen aficionados will relish this look at the husband-and-wife team's early work. Children's Literature
To be in print fifty years after its copyright makes this truly a golden book. This is an irresistible combination of circus glamour with its roaring lion, performing seals, skating bear, and the biggest, most magnificent elephants accompanied by the most ridiculous clowns and the most beautiful dancing horses. All of these plus delightful owner Mr. Roly-Poly and a mystery—what more could we ask? The rollicking pictures—the Provensen's were Caldecott Medalists—enhance the text and involve the reader's sense of touch with fuzzy flocking on the animals' coats. When Mr. Roly-Poly solves the mystery and the show finally goes on, it is, of course, "three times as big and bright and jolly and exciting as any other circus anywhere, any time, in all the whole world!" It should be noted that in the 1950s the sideshow attractions of the fat lady and the thin man were an accepted part of circus life; their inclusion today should be discussed with children. Indeed, the entire question of the treatment of circus animals can temper the use of this subject no matter how appealing the book may be. Nevertheless, this book remains a classic and captures the fun and excitement of big-top performance. 2005 (orig. 1950), Golden Fuzzy Book/Random House, Ages 3 to 6.
