Overview

Sports fans everywhere have heard the roar of the crowd and the crunch of the pads and helmets. The people responsible for bringing them to life, however, are the announcers, men who pioneered and promoted the profession, bringing the heart and soul of the game to living rooms across America. Families would listen to the radio while these announcers created an emotional bond between themselves and their audiences. Hall of Famers, former players, and sportswriters—each had a love of the game. Their enthusiasm brought that love to the fans unable to be at the football field. They were the first Golden Voices of Football. Curt Gowdy, Russ Hodges, Howard Cosell, Keith Jackson and, many other legendary broadcasters are highlighted in this comprehensive book and audio collection. Fans can listen to the companion audio CD as they relive famous game calls, interviews, and insights into the profession of football broadcasting. From a job with no rules to becoming legends in their own right, these announcers built a legacy as much a part of football as the teams on which they reported.

Meet the Author

Ted Patterson is a broadcast journalist who has covered the local sports scene since 1973. He was sports director at WBAL radio for six years before joining WMAR television as weekend anchor and later as sports director. As sports director at WPOC radio, he handled morning sports and began the popular "Sports Book" segment. In recent years, Patterson has done Orioles and Ravens reports on WCBM and has hosted the station's Monday night talk show from McCafferty's restaurant in Mt. Washington. He was the voice of Navy football for fourteen years and of the David Robinson-led Navy basketballers, has announced for Morgan State football, and did play-by-play for two Orioles seasons on Super-TV. Since the Ravens came to Baltimore, he has served as ESPN's game-day broadcaster. Patterson has been honored three times as Maryland Sportscaster of the Year, numerous times by the Chesapeake Associated Press Broadcasters Association, and in 1979 with the prestigious Eclipse Award for his coverage of thoroughbred racing in Maryland. His other books include Baltimore Orioles: Four Decades of Magic and Day by Day in Baltimore Orioles History.

    The Golden Voices of Football

This book by my friend, Ted Patterson, took over thirty years in the making. Ted always the consummate sports lover decided when in college in the mid-sixties to interview sportscasters from all walks of life. He traveled on a shoe-string budget over the East and Mid-west to interview as many sportscasters as he could find. His fifth book entitled THE GOLDEN VOICES OF BASEBALL, published by Sports Publishing, L.L.C. came out in November of 2002. As a companion in the series, THE GOLDEN VOICES OF FOOTBALL, also published by Sports Publishing, contains personal interviews with such greats as Bill Stern, Joe Tucker, Ken Coleman, Bob Wolff, Curt Gowdy, Howard Cosell, Ernie Harwell, Bob Ufer, Keith Jackson, Jack Buck and many other golden voices from a by-done era. Actually, I helped Ted with the original organization in the late sixties when his tapes became his Master's thesis at Miami University, and I came back to help him 34 years later with the football book. This book is beautifully written, has a plethora of wonderful pictures (many from Ted's own collection, plus artwork done by Mr. Patterson himself years ago), and a companion CD with 69 tracks taken from the exact interviews Ted did oh so many years ago. There is also play-by-play interaction as well. This book would make a great addition to anyone's sports collection, and I would recommend it highly. You may check out Ted's website, www.tedmpatterson.com for all Ted's books. My hat is off to Mr. Patterson for a job well done along with many well-deserving kudos.
