Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Bonita Herold
The Golly Toy and Game Company’s Gollywhopper Games was a huge success the first time, so the company’s executives decide to host the competition again. Twelve-year-old Cameron hopes to be selected for participation in the Gollywhopper Games; he won a ticket, after all. The trouble is that his big brother Spencer always gets what he wants—and he wants to qualify as a walk-on. But how can either one of them, realistically, expect to be selected? There are 999,900 kids hoping for a spot! If quiet Cameron makes it in, can he gain enough confidence to apply his math skills and be a valuable team member? Favorite characters from the first book make guest appearances, and a new cast of competitors compete against the brothers. Things become especially complicated when even the team members cannot agree. Each competitor has to decipher puzzle after puzzle, making the competition a twisty-turny race to the finish line! Reviewer: Bonita Herold; Ages 9 to 12.

Bert Golliwop and his executive team at Golly Toy and Game Company decide to hold a second round of Gollywhopper Games in this sequel. Enter 12-year-old Cameron, an ordinary middle child with an actual ticket to said games courtesy of older brother Spencer, who entered him thinking it would double his chances to get in. Mild-mannered Cameron might never have considered it. Spencer plays all the angles, and his competitiveness keeps the brothers at odds throughout. Cameron doesn't think much of his chances and really believes that his family hasn't any faith in him either, but he finds the games' puzzles intriguing. His video camera—his lifelong companion—has trained him to see things cinematically, and his observation skills become key. Readers might feel that they are following Cameron to his inevitable, big win, but Feldman is canny and employs hints of a possible act of sabotage to keep the outcome slightly more uncertain. Every puzzle is clearly explained but never too quickly, giving readers a chance to make their own guesses. (There are some amusing posers, but nothing requires calculus.) Some moral and ethical questions arise, but there's no time for soul-searching in this mildly amusing entertainment. Puzzle lovers who pick the book up wanting to hang out in the Gollywhopper world one more time will find themselves with a better-than-average sequel. (Fiction. 8-12)

Meet the Author

Jody Feldman has always loved riddles and brainteasers and word games, and she lives in a city on a river whose name contains four s's, two p's, and four i's. Jody has written as many books for young readers as there are players in a doubles tennis match. To find out how many brothers she has, take the number of bases on a baseball diamond and divide it by the number of times Grover Cleveland was president of the United States.
