Chris Garrett lives the good life making wine in the Napa Valley. It's harvest season, the most exciting time for a winemaker, and also the busiest. When Chris is not heaving hoses, or bowling barrels, or cleaning tanks, or crushing and fermenting grapes, or tasting wine – don't forget that – or troubleshooting the nearly infinite number of things that can go awry at a working winery – well, he's not sleeping much, that's for sure. With the threat of rain pushing up the harvest, and with every wine tank and fermentation vat filled to capacity, working long hours has become the rule, not the exception. So when boss and mentor Victor Miranda, legendary founder of Maverick Cellars, is found dead in a vat of fermenting wine, everyone assumes the drowning was an accident obviously caused by fatigue and overwork.
That's the official line. But like badly made wine, Chris just can't swallow it. In his opinion, Vic was too experienced a winemaker to have accidentally asphyxiated on CO2. He must have been pushed into that vat. The question is: who did the pushing?
With help from best friend Deputy Sheriff Jeff Beckwell, Chris does a little investigating on his own, but poking your nose into other people's business, much like detecting flaws in a highly touted cult cab, is usually resented. And soon Chris is fending off accusations, threats, and even an attempt on his life when forced off treacherous Spring Mountain Road by a white pickup.
Who could be desperate enough to want Chris dead? And does it have anything to do with Vic's illicit love affair? Or was it more about the questionable land deal Maverick Cellars was recently involved in? And who is the alluring woman in the red dress that seems so curious about Vic's death – and Chris's interest in it?
Can highly honed winemaking skills help detect the clues into why his mentor was murdered? Perhaps it's those very skills that will make it possible for Chris to solve the mystery.
