Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leigh Geiger
Do you have only 15 minutes to get the family dinner ready? Is the entire soccer team coming over for snacks in 5 minutes? Do you want to focus only on nutritious foods for your family? If so, this is the cookbook for you. It is written from the parent's point of view with tips for organizing the kitchen, weekly meal planning and grocery shopping. More than 300 recipes are included. Almost all rely on basic, economical ingredients and simple, straightforward directions that would be easy for most teens and even some pre-teens to follow. There is a short discussion of how to involve teens in planning and cooking meals and a list of the most teen-friendly recipes in the book. This sturdy paperback is well organized by meal type (breakfast, snack, lunch, dinners) with colored tabs along the page edges to facilitate browsing. The recipe format is consistent throughout the book and very user friendly. Directions are displayed in a large font. Ingredients are listed in bold, and prep time, cook time and servings are prominently displayed. Unfortunately, there are no pictures—this will be a major drawback for some readers. Most parents and teens would find it easier to decide which recipes to try if they could envision the dish. While this cookbook is marketed to "on-the-go' families of all ages, many of the recipes rely on spices such as horseradish, chili peppers or garlic that are not likely to appeal to young children with less adventurous palates. Reviewer: Leigh Geiger, Ph.D.
