Overview

For fans of Christina Dodd and Elizabeth Boyle.

Claire Bannister just wants to be a good teacher so that she and the other ladies of the Governess Club can make enough money to leave their jobs and start their own school in the country. But when the new sinfully handsome and utterly distracting tutor arrives, Claire finds herself caught up in a whirlwind romance that could change the course of her future.

Jacob Knightly has a secret. He is actually the notorious Earl of Rimmel. He's just posing as a tutor to escape his reputation in the city. He never expected to fall in love with the kind and beautiful governess. She is the first person to love him for himself and not his title.

But when Jacob's true identity is revealed, Claire realizes she has risked her reputation and her heart on a man she doesn't truly know. Will Jacob be able to convince her that the Wild Earl has been tamed and that she is the true countess of his heart?

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In order to preserve her honor when her father dies and leaves her penniless, Claire Bannister elects to become a governess to four children in a country home. Through her employment, she meets three other young ladies who also were born into comfortable existences and ultimately cast out to make their own way. Together, Claire and the other governesses make a pact to save their collective wages in order to purchase Claire’s former home and start a tutoring business, but they are several years from their goal. Seemingly unspoiled by her changed circumstances, Claire is prepared to while away quietly the time in her role as governess, but things quickly go awry with the arrival of the new tutor, Jacob Knightly. With his lack of deference to others above his station and his air of expectancy that is more in line with his true identity as the Earl of Rimmel, Jacob is no ordinary tutor, and Claire is immediately intrigued. Through a whirlwind courtship, the pair fall blissfully into love, but that may change when Claire discovers Jacob’s secret and learns why he is hiding out in the country.

Verdict Although Claire’s story is typical of the historical romance genre—the romance between the protagonists develops quickly, secrets threaten their happiness, and the ensuing conflict is fraught with misunderstandings but resolved in short order—it is also sweet and heartwarming. More important, it introduces us to the other ladies in the “Governess Club” series. This reviewer is eager to see how their individual stories unfold. Recommended.—Natasha Grant, New York

THE GOVERNESS CLUB: CLAIRE by Ellie MacDonald is an exciting Regency Historical Romance by a wonderful and talented debut author. #1 in “The Governess Club” series. What a debut!! I loved this story from beginning to end. Four young governess’ trying to find a better life and help others in their situation. The first up is Claire Bannister, spunky, dedicated governess, who finds herself attracted to her charges new tutor, the handsome, and charming, Jacob Knightly, who has a secret. Jacob is the notorious, reckless Earl of Rimmel. A sweet tale of secrets, lies, passion and romance, what’s not to enjoy! Fast paced, and a quick read, you will not go wrong with “The Governess Club: Claire”. Well written with engaging characters and an interesting storyline. If you enjoy spunk, dedication, passion, and romance, than this is the one for you to read. I can hardly wait to see what is in store for the other Governess’!! Actually 4.5 stars The first of a new series by Ellie Macdonald, The Governess Club: Claire is a well-devised historical romance novella with many moments of laughter and smiles.  Claire is the first in the series, a group of young ladies who wish to become self-directed and start their own school.  But, in the meantime they must earn the funds to start their dream venture, and this is Claire’s story.   One of the highlights for me in this story was the characterizations: each person we meet is developed with care and skill, incorporating humor, appropriate language and vivid descriptions to bring them breath and life.  Claire is, understandably, determined and sharp-witted, with a penchant for propriety that is ingrained as another element to help her achieve her end goals.  When the house in which she is employed decides to hire a tutor for the children, her  carefully plotted life goals are thrown into a tailspin, allowing her the dream of something more than a life of teaching other people’s children.  As the tutor, Jacob is really quite clever and funny.  Hiding the fact that he is an Earl, his attitude and charming manner are quite unlike anything Claire has encountered on a personal level.  As the two start to develop a friendship, their conversations and his approach show a caring heart and sense of chivalry that was initially not apparent.  Conversations are clever and quite well crafted, with humor and heart in the forefront.   Additionally the children are developed with quirks and outrageous statements that bring their characters a dimensionality that is rare in stories of this type.   While the angst created with Claire’s stubbornness regarding Jacob’s initial truth-withholding, the two do manage to work through that as Claire also holds a secret, and it is possibly the key to their easy understanding of one another.  The heart and its desires are at the forefront of this story, despite the societal restrictions of place and position and conflicts that they encounter.  With a fun ending that will suit many readers, this was a book that ended with a smile.  I received an eBook copy from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review as part of the Tasty Book Tours. Lovely, romantic, and a fantastic historical romance novella. Claire was a wonderful romance read. I really enjoyed reading this lovely book. Claire was a very strong character. She knew what she wanted and nothing was going to stop her from getting it. I liked her for the most part. My one objection was that I didn't understand why she was so mad when she found out that Jacob had been lying. I didn't think it was that big a deal. But, overall, I thought she was great. Jacob was a sweetheart. He was wonderful and I adored him. He wanted to prove to himself and his family that he was good for something and he certainly did. Who knew a privileged lord could be a great tutor and a self-sufficient man? I thought he was wonderful and I really liked him. The romance was really sweet. Claire and Jacob were adorable together and I thought their relationship was well developed for a novella. And there was a dash of spice to make things hot. The plot was steadily paced. I was kept interested the entire way through. I really enjoyed the story and the ending was lovely. Claire was a fantastic historical romance novella. I really enjoyed reading it. Romance lovers, if you want a great, quick read, then you have to check this out. *I received a free copy from the publisher in exchange for an honest review
