Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

On his website, Dr. David Perlmutter calls himself an "empowering neurologist," and in the past year, millions of readers have taken him at his word. His 2013 Grain Brain became a longtime tenant on bestseller lists in several countries with its call for eliminating grains and following a low-carb, high-fat diet, which, he asserts, can prevent Alzheimer's disease and reverse Type 2 Diabetes and ADHD. This much-requested cookbook is the next step, providing readers with 150 delicious gluten-free recipes to get them and their families on the path to lasting health. Bound to be a bestseller.

Library Journal
10/01/2014
Perlmutter (Grain Brain) is a proponent of the controversial theory that gluten and sugar cause an array of neurological disorders, including depression, Alzheimer's disease, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and that radically changing one's diet can reverse the development and progression of these and many other ailments. This companion to the author's best-selling Grain Brain provides more than 150 recipes that conform to the strict diet parameters he sets out in the introduction. The science behind Perlmutter's claims is questionable and the promises he makes about the effects of following his diet are hyperbolic. The book's arguments are also poorly cited, which doesn't serve those who haven't already read his previous volume. However, the recipes are mostly appealing and don't call for too many unusual or hard-to-find ingredients. Traditional medicine might question the health impact of a salad that contains roast beef, turkey, swiss cheese, cheddar cheese, and hard-boiled egg, but for those following a strict gluten-free diet, this cookbook would be a welcome addition to their collection. VERDICT Recommended only for libraries where Perlmutter's books are in high demand.—Laura Krier, Sonoma State Univ., Rohnert Park, CA

After a serious wakeup call about a lot of the foods that we eat

After a serious wakeup call about a lot of the foods that we eat from my current plan, "The Hungry Chick Dieting Solution," I have been trying to find different new recipes to help me maintain the 17 pounds that I lost over the summer using Hungry Chick. After leafing through the Grain Brain Cookbook, I decided to buy it. I can't get over how helpful these recipes are. There was a big expectation that these recipes would just rehash what we all knew already: eggs, avocados, breakfast shakes, grass-fed meat...but there's SO MUCH beyond that. There is something for everyone in this book. My favorite is probably Dr. Perlmutter's take on Eggs Benedict. It's a heavy duty recipe, but the pay-off is worth it! I had it for lunch and it was delicious and fulfilling.

    A great read

This book was more informative about how we should eat than just talking about grains. One thing I learned is that agave nectar is higher in fructose than high fructose corn syrup; what an eye opener as a lot of chefs use this instead of sugar.

There are tons of cookbooks out there.  This one combines some of the best science on health as the companion to Grain Brain and it is loaded with its own science and information right in the cookbook!  So far, this has been a great resource in my kitchen to whipping up something quick for me and my family for dinner and breakfast!  Thanks Dr Perlmutter.

A High Class, Low Carb Cookbook, with GREAT Recipes!

A year ago I bought Grain Brain, started to follow the advice therein, and within days all my joint pain vanished, I stopped feeling sluggish in the afternoons, and I started losing weight. Within weeks my prediabetic blood sugars were in the normal range. I became a firm believer in a low carbohydrate, high healthful fat, modest protein diet, and I give Dr. Perlmutter credit for being the first one to teach me how to make these health gains. My husband also joined on board, and we are both reaping the benefits of his advice. We eagerly bought this cookbook, not knowing what it would contain, other than being low carb. Turns out it has many recipes I have not found online, or in my other books, and the vast majority of these recipes I would serve to company. The pictures are beautiful (I wish there were more of them!) and the instructions are easy to follow. Thus far, I have made the recipes for tomato sauce, spaghetti squash, tomato soup, coconut bursts, perfect roast chicken, green beans with walnuts, and salmon with almonds. My next project will be to make the roast chicken with pesto and ricotta cheese. Thank you, Dr. Perlmutter, for all your work! This is a book I plan on using and re-using, and it would make a great gift for the upcoming holiday season!

Wonderful cookbook!  I was concerned that it would have voting recipes.  But, I was pleasantly surprised by the variety and flavor profiles. After a while of being grain free I really don't miss it too much.  I haven't tried the recipes yet, but I am excited to give them a try.
