Editorial Reviews

The Washington Times
...a compact but impressively researched book....
Texas Bar Journal
The Grand Panjandrum not only provides a closer look at one of the towering figures of American legal thought but also lends valuable insight into the personal qualities that can influence the judicial decision-making process.
Choice
A balanced appraisal of the human side of the legendary Holmes, written with charm and grace that can be enjoyed by any mature, sophisticated reader. Careful documentation and good index. For general readers, graduate students, and faculty.
New York State Bar Journal
This book is a gem. It is little...it sparkles; and it is valuable. Oddly, despite all the books and articles that have been written about Justice Holmes, this book fills a gap.
The Washington Times - Eugene V. Rostow
...a delight. It is not, as one might expect, an exercise in nostalgia, but a witty, perceptive, and learned portrait of an eminent Victorian who also happened to be a great judge, a great stylist, and a great man. The book is rich in anecdote, much of it collected through interviews with Holmes' surviving law clerks. Moreover, the author has discovered that Holmes and an Irish noblewoman had a prolonged amitiè amoureuse which he delineates with insight and feeling.
CHOICE
A balanced appraisal of the human side of the legendary Holmes, written with charm and grace that can be enjoyed by any mature, sophisticated reader. Careful documentation and good index. For general readers, graduate students, and faculty.
