The whole thing is a pleasure to the ears, with its most impressive stretch running near the end, from the stern synthesizer prickles of John Carpenter's "The President Is Gone" (1981), to the half-tentative/half-sprightly flute of Yusef Lateef's "The Three Faces of Balal" (1961), to the pulse-racing bleeps of Robert Hood's "Minus" (1994), to the quavering tones of Raymond Scott's "Bass-Line Generator" (recorded way back in the '50s). There's often no clear beginning or end to the selections. It's all as steady as any contemporary techno mix made with releases from like-minded labels. A second disc gathers 14 of the 18 tracks in unmixed form.
