Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
Subtitled "For the Grandma Who's Best at Everything," this book offers advice for new, first-time grandmothers. The book begins with a specific recognition of the different ways of grandparenting in the twenty-first century, offering advice about what grandparents today should not do—specify potty-training time, encourage denial of pacifiers, insist on an early bedtime, and make mothers feel guilty for returning to work. However, this nod toward modern parenting and grandparenting seems at odds with some of the "facts" stated by the book: the average age when people become grandparents is forty-seven, one-third of people at age fifty are grandparents, and one-half of people at age fifty-four are grandparents. These ages seem contradictory with recent statistics about later marriages and childbearing among adults in recent years. The book offers recipes to be made in Grandma's Kitchen, supplies grandmas should always have on hand, fun crafts grandmas can do with small children, and fun activities to have at home. The book also offers suggestions for individual development, such as exercise and social outings. It is difficult to imagine modern grandmothers being inspired or instructed by the text.
